Professional tooth gel for caries prophylaxis and erosion protection

CURODONT PROTECT is a remineralising gel for use in-office and at home.

The patented biomimetic Oligo-Peptide technology forms a protective layer that shields enamel and dentin against bacterial and food acids, effectively protecting the tooth from caries and erosion. It also gives a unique smooth teeth sensation.

Especially suited for patients at a high risk of caries, including those undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment/aligner therapy, for patients with high acidic exposure (fruit juices, sweet drinks, acid reflux), and as a finish for professional dental cleaning or bleaching appointments. Suitable for all patients above 6 years of age.

In the Curodont Protect tooth gel, the Oligo-Peptide technology is present as a biomimetic matrix enriched with calcium, phosphate, and fluoride. Thanks to the peptide’s high affinity to hydroxyapatite, it adheres to the tooth surface and creates a stable and protective layer. This mineral-rich peptide layer:

Shields enamel from demineralisation due to acids, defending it against caries and erosion
Attracts ions from the saliva, promoting the formation of new hydroxyapatite crystals, which strengthen the tooth by reinforcing natural enamel
Gives teeth a noticeable smoother and shinier surface that helps resist plaque deposition and stain formation.

Scientific & Clinical Evidence
1. Curodont Protect restores the microhardness of enamel significantly better than other enamel remineralizing agents, including fluoride varnish (FV), bioactive glass (BAG), and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate fluoride (CPP-ACPF).

2. Curodont Protect demonstrates a significant clinical benefit in the protection of teeth from caries and impeding the progress of initial demineralisation of enamel, especially in high-risk caries patients, such as those undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment.

Curodont Protect is an easy-to-use regenerative gel that can be applied by a dental professional as well as by the patients themselves.

How to Apply in Dental Office

Curodont Protect can be applied by dentists/dental hygienists after professional dental cleaning or bleaching. Additionally, it can be applied at the end of each orthodontic follow-up appointment.

1. Apply Curodont Protect on all teeth surfaces using a rubber polisher, a microbrush, or an interdental brush.

2. Wait for 1-2 minutes.

3. Ask the patients to spit out the remnants, if necessary. Rinsing immediately after application is not recommended, so as to maintain the contact of the gel on the teeth for as long as possible.

Curodont Protect can be used by patients at home once or twice a week after brushing before bedtime to reinforce their routine oral hygiene measures.

HOW TO APPLY AT HOME

1. Apply Curodont Protect using a finger over all teeth surfaces.

2. Wait for 1-2 minutes.

3. Spit out the remnants, if needed. Rinsing immediately after application is not advised.

Hints & Tips

  • What is Curodont Protect?
Curodont Protect is a regenerative gel that forms a stable, long-lasting barrier over enamel and exposed dentine when applied regularly. This protective layer shields the tooth from the attack of acids. These acids could be of bacterial origin, which cause caries, or dietary acids, which lead to erosion of the enamel.
  • What is tooth erosion?
Packaged and processed foods and beverages might be acidic, with many of them having a pH lower than 4.* Additionally, in some conditions such as bulimia, pregnancy, alcoholism, etc., people might experience reflux of stomach acids. Sustained exposure to acids, whether from an external or an internal source, can lead to significant dissolution of minerals from the tooth enamel. This gradual demineralization is known as erosion, and it manifests as a yellow-ish appearance of the tooth, softening and weakening of enamel surface, and extreme hypersensitivity. *Reddy A, Norris DF, Momeni SS, Waldo B, Ruby JD. The pH of beverages in the United States. J Am Dent Assoc. 2016 Apr;147(4):255-63.
  • How does Curodont Protect work?
The protective effect of Curodont Protect is based on the clinically proven and globally patented 'Oligo-Peptide' technology (formerly, 'X' technology). The Curodont Protect gel comprises a matrix of 'intelligent' peptides with very high affinity to hydroxyapatite, the main mineral component of a tooth. This matrix, enriched with calcium, phosphate, and fluoride ions, forms a stable, highly effective protective barrier on the tooth surface against the attack of acids. It thus protects the tooth from initiation of caries as well as against erosion of the enamel. This is especially important in patients at a high risk of caries such as those undergoing orthodontic multibracket treatment, those with special needs, etc. Additionally, patients suffering from acid reflux and those with a high consumption of acidic beverages can benefit from the protection Curodont Proect offers against the erosion of enamel.
  • When should Curodont Protect be used?
Curodont Protect is easy to use and does not require any sophisticated armamentarium. It can be applied by both the dentist and by patients themselves. The dental professional can apply the gel after a dental treatment, such as a routine professional dental cleaning, bleaching, or an orthodontic follow-up. Furthermore, it can directly be used by all patients for bolstering their routine oral hygiene measures. This is especially important in patients exhibiting unsatisfactory oral hygiene, such as those undergoing multibracket orthodontic treatment, to protect their teeth from initiation of caries.
  • Is the application of Curodont Protect enough for the management of tooth erosion?
While regular use of Curodont Protect is promising in shielding teeth from dietary acids, it is essential that the cause of tooth erosion be eliminated first. If the source of acid is dietary, the consumption of acidic foods and beverages must be reduced or stopped. If the source is the reflux of stomach acids, the underlying medical condition must be dealt with meticulously. Adequate management of the etiology of erosion is critical to achieve an optimum effect of Curodont Protect.
  • How should Curodont Protect be used?
Curodont Protect is applied by the dental professional or by the patients themselves. The dental professional may use a rubber polisher, interdental brush or a micro-brush to spread the gel gently over the tooth surface. When using at home, patients can spread the gel evenly over all tooth surfaces with a finger at least twice a week, after brushing before bedtime. The gel must be allowed to stay on the teeth undisturbed for 1-2 min before spitting out the remnants, if needed. Patients should be asked not to rinse, so as to maintain the contact of the gel with the teeth for as long as possible.
  • Can Curodont Protect treat hypersensitivity?
While Curodont Protect can reduce hypersensitivity, we recommend the use of Curodont D'Senz, which is specially formulated for the management of hypersensitivity.
  • Can Curodont Protect be used to treat initial caries?
Curodont Protect was developed to provide teeth with effective protection against the loss of minerals. In this capacity, the Curodont Protect gel forms a stable shield on the tooth surface and protects the tooth from the development of caries. However, if an initial carious lesion has already formed, Curodont Repair can be used to achieve an in-depth regeneration of enamel within the carious lesion. This is facilitated by the low-viscosity liquid formulation of Curodont Repair.
  • What happens if Curodont Protect is swallowed by accident?
The formulation used for Curodont Protect is characterised by excellent tolerance. Nonetheless, the gel (just like toothpaste) should not be swallowed. No safety risks are known.
  • Does Curodont Protect contain fluoride?
Yes. Curodont Protect contains fluoride in a concentration of 900 ppm. The compound of fluoride included in Curodont Protect is sodium monofluorophosphate.
  • How is Curodont Protect different from fluoride?
Fluoride has long been known to be beneficial for caries prevention. Curodont Protect contains Fluoride, in the form of sodium monofluorophosphate, in a concentration similar to toothpastes. Therefore, Curodont Protect combines the caries-preventive benefits of fluoride and the biomimetic enamel regeneration effect of the 'Oligo-peptide' technology (formerly, 'X' technology). Fluoride varnishes are usually indicated 2-3 times a year in patients with a high caries risk and are meant to be applied by a dental professional. Curodont Protect may be used by these patients at home by themselves all through the year for continuing protection from caries. Furthermore, the application of a product with high fluoride concentration, like fluoride varnish, is not contraindicated when a patient is using Curodont Protect.
